4 Reasons why New Year’s Resolutions just don’t work

As 2016 begins some of us decide to make a New Year’s Resolution.
But what does that actually mean?
I looked it up and the word ‘resolution’ can be defined as “a firm decision to do or not to do something”.

Many will choose to diet, exercise, give up smoking, drinking. More interesting ones include learn a new party trick or visit interesting places. Some veer towards social conscience and will decide to donate their time to a worthy cause or simply just smile at the postman.

Mindfulness has taken off in the past few years and it is now ok to stop, look and notice. We really don’t have to be juggling a million things at a time to feel good about ourselves. Although most of us mums are quite simply amazing at multi-tasking, we now have mindful permission to stop and smell the flowers. Halleluyah for that!

Maybe this is the year we can all lift our heads away from our phones and notice what is around us. And no. That is not an excuse to take a photo and post it on Facebook. Put your phone down and enjoy what is around you. Experience it purely for yourself. You do not need the world and his wife to know where you are, who you’re with or how you’re feeling.

There are many fabulous online projects promoting how to live happy, fulfilled lives. Check out The Bright Side and Action for Happiness. The film ‘The Bucket List’ (a MUST watch) sees two elderly gentlemen, in the winter of their lives, experience wonderful, amazing yet ordinary things before it’s too late.

So why do NYR fail to work?

Four simple reasons:
1. Same job
2. Same husband/wife/partner
3. Same friends
4. Same life

See where I am going with this?
Nothing will change from December 31st to January 1st – only the calendar date. You will wake up in the morning with the world looking exactly the same.

Unless.
Unless you decide to make a change. That can be any day of the year. That can be any change you want. In the UK we live in a free society and we luckily are able to make our own choices. Live the life you want to live. Make a Bucket List and experience them all. It’s about planning.

You are in control of you. (Yes I agree that many experience mental illness and do not have the luxury of control).

But your life is in your hands.

If the children are driving you bonkers you CAN do something about it. You can make positive change in your life.

Just make the decision.

Make it now. Make the change. Make your firm decision. Make your resolution.
